Joan BrittJoan Britt

Joan C. Britt, 83, of Bloomington, died on Sunday, July 23, 2017 at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center in Normal.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 27, 2017 at Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington with Rev. Keith Ferguson officiating. Interment will be at the Community Church of the Verdes Memorial Garden in Rio Verde, Ariz.

Born January 9, 1934 in Coon Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Wm. E. and Velma (McLaughlin) Cory, Joan graduated from Iowa State Teachers College (now University of Northern Iowa) and worked as a teacher when she first got out of college. She married Glenn A. Britt on August 21, 1955 in Coon Rapids, Iowa and he preceded her in death on April 25, 2008.

Joan and Glenn were married for 53 years and referred to themselves as Nomad’s as they transferred around the country with State Farm. Throughout their lives, the made many wonderful friends everywhere they lived and travelled.

Joan was a lifelong student and read at least one newspaper each and every day. She devoted energy to many causes and groups, among them, PEO and 4 o’clock History Club.

Having a love of sports, Joan was a passionate fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bulls…”Go Hawks!” More than one Christmas was spent watching the Chicago Bulls in the United Center. She also played basketball, enjoyed snow skiing and golfed into her 80’s 3 days a week.

Survivors include two daughters, Syd Britt of Savannah, Ga. and Johnna Britt of Walkersville, Md; a sister-in-law, Catherine T. Britt of Elgin, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Maurice Bowes of Anaheim, Calif. and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, John Cory; a sister, Karen Cory Jones; a brother-in-law, Verlon Britt and a sister-in-law, Anna Lou Britt Bowes.

The love and support she expressed to all her family and friends will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association or the charity of the donor’s choice.
